Lego games are meant for all ages, and so some of the darker and more adult themes present in the movies and franchises that the blocky characters are re-enacting don’t quite fit into the intended audience.

Lego games are known for their witty and unique humor, and so the game developers have, time and time again, found funny and sneaky ways to get around some of the darker scenes present in franchises like Marvel, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, and Thomas the Tank Engine. Well, maybe not quite that last one.

Strong

Star Wars fans will remember Princess Leia being held captive by the large and in-charge gangster slug Jabba the Hut. In the films, Leia thematically uses her own chains to strangle the horrible alien to his end.

This, of course, was not appropriate for the younger ones, and so the developers of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga decided to go for a different approach. R2-D2 helps free Leia from the chain, and after a boss battle, Jabba falls from his hovering space limo into the sands below, assumingly being devoured by the sarlacc pit.

One of the big points of Superman’s origin is that his parents sent him flying from Krypton as it blew up with them on it. LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham’s writers thought that this wasn’t really an important detail, so no need to bring it up or anything.

The game cleverly nods to the idea that the couple are gone, but never states it outright, with Jor-El asking him to send a card to them before taking it back almost immediately, hinting that it would be impossible since they are exploded.

9 Voldemort’s End - Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7

Voldemort’s ending in the Harry Potter films doesn’t make quick work of the horrible villain. The graduate of Hogwarts who can’t seem to get over his alma mater slowly disintegrates in what looks like a very painful death. One is that the Lego games are surprisingly unafraid to show some similarities.

In Lego Voldemort's death, instead of swirling patches of the snake-man’s skin circling around him as he evaporates, his Lego pieces slowly tear off until the last few pieces of his body come apart. For Lego standards, this one is pretty visceral. Still slightly censored, but good on Lego for staying pretty loyal to the source material.

8 That Ark Scene - Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues

Melting Faces Wasn’t Going To Fly

Indiana Jones Lego Ark opening cutscene

The original Indiana Jones film had a pretty graphic ending, as the villains open the fabled ark and are immediately melted, brutalized, or otherwise unalived. While many toddlers know what a melted Lego figure looks like by testing out their microwave, these scenes were not suitable for a younger audience.

Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues censors this scene by making things a bit more silly rather than filled with horror. When the characters open the ark of the covenant, they are taken over by the power of dance, hypnotized, and then disappear. That’s the Lego version of being melted down to your skeleton.

There is a great joke in Ant-Man where the titular character and the villain, Yellowjacket, battle on a children’s train set, making their high stakes battle sillier as a small wooden toy changes the direction of the fight. In the film, this is clearly Thomas the Tank Engine, a popular line of children’s train-based toys and characters.

In Lego Marvel’s Avengers, Ant-man makes a comment referring to a ‘really useful engine’ in his battle with Yellowjacket, a reference to Thomas the Tank Engine the game obviously danced around due to licensing issues. Lego is a children’s toy brand after all, and likely Thomas and his friends are a competing business Lego isn’t ready to bring more attention to.

6 How Joker Got His Scarves - Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

My Father Was a Knitter and a Fiend

Lego Batman joker dialogue scarfs during combat

The Joker in The Dark Knight is famous for his ever-changing origin story and reasons why the scars on his face came to be, asking victims how he got his facial scars. The character says he did it, his father did it, and likely was about to tell an untrue third story before Batman knocks him off a building in the film.

Lego is a little more hesitant to talk directly about this darker subject matter, and so the Joker of the game is said to have asked Alfred, “how I got these scarves.” This could be seen as Alfred mishearing him, or The Joker actually said that, instead of scars, either way the game is doing a clever job of referencing the moment in the film while avoiding the darker elements of the villain.

5 Tyrannosaurus Attack - Lego Jurassic World

Brushing Away the Violence

Lego Jurassic Park Tyrannosaurus bite scene

The original Jurassic Park film had a terrifying death scene when a T. rex finds someone after a washroom breaks down and goes right in to bite them in half. The T. rex chase in the film is one of the most recognizable in pop culture, and instilled a deep fear of the large dinosaur in many people worldwide.

While Tyrannosaurus is still a scary creature to face in Lego Jurassic World, the scene from the film is changed from a meal into almost the opposite. Gennaro is picked up by the Tyrannosaurus but instead of being eaten, Gennaro gives the dinosaur a toothbrushing in his mouth.

4 Quicksilver Gets Ice Creamed - Lego Marvel’s Avengers

His Body Still Goes Cold

Quicksilver Lego Avengers death scene

One of the more confusing deaths of the Marvel cinematic universe is Quicksilver, the speedster who, despite being faster than a speeding bullet, finds his demise from a hail of gunfire. Granted, the character was protecting Hawkeye and an innocent bystander, but it seems super speed should grant the hero many options in dealing with this situation.

Lego re-wrote the scene to be something just as plausible but much funnier, as Lego Quicksilver in a similar scene from Avengers: Age of Ultron is not bulleted to death, but seemingly ice-creamed to death. Instead of bullet wounds, Quicksilver is littered with ice cream, which turns out to be his weakness as he falls.

3 Gazer Beam - Lego The Incredibles

The Biggest Re-write in Lego History

Lego Incredibles Gazer Beam in cave with Syndrome doll cutscene

One of the most silent yet important characters in The Incredibles film is the hero Gazer Beam, who makes Mr. Incredibles escape from Syndrome possible by not only posthumously giving the hero the password to Syndrome’s computer, but also leaving his body behind to be used for camouflage against Syndrome’s drones.

The Lego version of this moment is a surprising and funny revision of the events. Instead of Mr. Incredible discovering Gazer Beam’s skeleton, he discovers an odd Syndrome-based doll, to which Gazer Beam reveals himself to be alive in the same cave. Instead of being killed by Syndrome, Gazer Beam was hit on the head by Mr. Incredible’s landing pod, and is now a playable character with Cyclops-type powers.

2 I HATE YOU - Lego Star Wars: The Video Game

Funny On Purpose

Star Wars Lego Anakin becomes Vader

The fated break-up between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi was met with a mixed response when Revenge of the Sith first came out. Some found it epic and perfect, while others thought Anakin’s betrayal and performance were over the top and not written very well. While audience members were not meant to find the scene funny, many did.

In Lego Star Wars: The Video Game, they embrace the more comic nature of the scene, as Anakin’s body, which is being burnt to a crisp and separated, starts wandering around the lava-filled area, and Anakin’s missing hand takes on a mind of its own.
